Beyond Sushi

NYC Day 6 April 30th

Last full day in New York City; time fly’s when you’re running from place to place, all to stay on our strict schedule… Dayna! Today the team split up, Dayna and I went to Coney Island while Margaret and David went to a few museums.

The metro ride to Coney Island from uptown Manhattan was long…. Really long… Taking the express still took about an hour to get to our destination. Coney Island was super cute to see. The rides were not running but just being in a place that is so familiar from the movies was too cool. We walked the board walk about 3 km and got to smell the fresh ocean air. Some of the boardwalk was closed off to the public as it was being repaired from the damages caused by Hurricane Sandy.

We then jumped back on the metro up to Brooklyn to try and find 24 Scoops and Plates Ice Cream parlour which is vegan. It was cloudy when we got to prospect park and only 10:45am… But Dayna and I are slightly crazy and thought vegan ice cream even if it snowed would be worth the memory. Sadly the shop was closed (we seem to have poor timing on this trip). On the way back to the subway we passed a cafe that sold Kombucha on tap which was almost better than ice cream! I had jasmine flavoured and she had grape… Both tasted next to identical which was a little disturbing.

Back on the metro we went; up to Union Square…. Why union square? I’ll tell you way, because it’s the location of Beyond Sushi‘s first location!!!! Beyond Sushi is a small sushi chain in NYC that specializes in gourmet vegan sushi! We met the owner at the store and ordered I’d say 80% of the menu! Yes we ordered all 8 of their sushi rolls, their sushi of the month sashimi, the seaweed salad sashimi, all three of their rice paper rolls and the kimchi hand roll! We figured we would take all left overs for dinner tonight 🙂 the staff at the restaurant said they’ve never had two customers come in before to order that much off the menu! But how could we not? Once in a lifetime opportunity to try it all! My favourite roll was the miso roll and the wasabi roll. The nutty buddy rice paper wrap was to die for! Dayna’s favourite roll was the basil marinated something. It was such a fun afternoon and Dayna, being the foodie she is, was the perfect person to spend it with!

With three hours to spare and nothing planned on our itinerary, Dayna and I decided to come back to the hostel to do laundry, sit outside and blog. Tomorrow the team is off to New Paltz (upstate New York) for some well-deserved rest and relaxation!
